Choosing the Best Christchurch Plumbing Company

Many people find the thought of hiring a new plumber extremely scary.  Luckily, in a large enough New Zealand city like this one, there are plenty of possibilities so there should be no doubt in your mind that a good plumber is out there.  The problem is, of course, with such a large number of plumbers, there are bound to be some lousy ones in the mix.

Although finding a good new Christchurch plumbing professional isn’t hard, there are some important things to take into consideration before giving that first paycheck.  If you want the job done right, you shouldn’t mind doing some extra homework beforehand.  The internet is a very useful tool, and researching local businesses becomes much easier when used properly.

It’s important to first gather a list of all the Christchurch plumbing companies you can find in either your phone book or a yellow pages type site.  When you have this list in front of you, try google searching each name.  You might want to also search for the name of the company and a term like “reviews” or “good” or “bad”.  Essentially you want to get a feel for how people rate this specific plumber in Christchurch compared to other plumbers.  Try not to focus so much on the paid advertisements in google on the top and right side of the page.  Sure, they are usually reliable, but keep in mind right now we are looking for reviews.  Forums and blogs are great places to get reviews.

Now that you’ve narrowed down your list of Christchurch plumbing companies to only ones that appear to be reliable, it’s time to start making some phone calls.  You should call 3-5 plumbers and be able to ask them for their prices.  Beware of a price sounding way too low.  If it’s too good to be true it most often is, unless there’s some legitimate explanation for it.  It’s worth doing this extra stuff because the last thing you want is to get ripped off in the end.  Since no plumbing problem is exactly the same, you really want to try to hire a plumber with the most experience possible.  The most experienced plumber in New Zealand will have seen more plumbing problems than the rest, so he has more scenarios in his memory to compare your current problem to.  If you do use a plumber and have a good experience with him, consider leaving a review online somewhere to make the process a little easier for the next person who does what you just did.

What You Can Do To Make Sure Your Plumbing System Doesn’t Fail

First, a little history of indoor plumbing and how it came to be.  Outdoor plumbing used to be the be all end all, and something like indoor plumbing was merely dreamed about.   The extent of knowledge of how to do things was to make the pipes out of metal and run the lines where it made sense to run them.  There was no knowledge of things like using vents, or draining excesses.  Clearly, Christchurch plumbing was never as good as it is now.

Because plumbing didn’t used to be as exact of a science as it is today, some old homes are still equipped with antiquated setups, and the modern plumber is expected to handle such ordeals.  If there was a standard laid down 100 years ago, life would be much easier in this trade.

Since water has the tendency to be quite corrosive (obviously this wasn’t well known years in the past), very much attention must be paid to the integrity of pipes.  Over a long period of time, water moving along a pipe can begin to wear away at the metal, which then, after much pressure is applied, can cause a pipe to burst.  Many a Christchurch plumber has dealt with such situations, and it isn’t pretty.

Another issue is that pipes can be very near failure without an actual leak being visible.  It is this reason that true professionals will go the extra mile to ensure there isn’t any near-leaks or potential problems when doing his/her job.  Often Christchurch plumbing inspections will come up with these, but one has to wonder how many get missed, which would cause serious damage to a house with all the water that could leak out onto the bathroom or kitchen floor.

Often the plumbing pressure of a neighborhood is higher than that of a typical house.  That’s where regulators come in; this way pressure can be chosen so a house isn’t forced to run at a pressure that it can’t withstand.  The problem is that regulators can fail, and that’s when some serious problems can occur.  If odd or loud noises are coming from the loo after a flush, it might indicate higher than expected pressure and possibly a failed regulator.  When first moving in, it is recommended to check the home’s water pressure and also repeat this check on a 1-2 year basis to make sure there aren’t any problems in the works.
